Why I love my grater
This Microplane grater makes zesting citrus and grating ingredients a joy. The incredibly sharp (watch out for those knuckles!) teeth tear beautifully delicate shreds of zest, cheese and chocolate or make fluffy little piles of powdery fresh nutmeg in seconds. Wonderfully efficient to use, even to watch in action. Or so says my mum.
Microplane cooking tips
There are so many ingredients that benefit from being shaved through this grater.
Fresh garlic, quickly and easily puréed, ready to blend into a creamy Caesar salad dressing.
Fresh ginger too, ploughing through the tough fibres.
Use the ginger purée in sauces like this Garlic-ginger-chilli-soy marinade and dip above or for something sweet, White chocolate crème brûlée with fresh ginger.
The Microplane grater is fantastic at zesting citrus fruits – a task it truly excels at – taking off only beautiful wisps of tangy, concentrated zest and none of the bitter pith.
Try a mix of orange, lemon and pink grapefruit zests in these Gin and citrus éclairs or for something more savoury perhaps these Courgette burgers with feta, flavoured with fruity, floral lemon.
Whole nutmeg, so superior to its pre-ground counterpart, is reduced to powder with a couple of strokes. Put it to good use in this Blue cheese pâté or a warming Potato dauphinoise with pumpkin.
The list goes on…
